This is not a real post. Or at least not the post I I intended. It is more like an update since I have been missing in action for over 48 hours. I arrived safely in Paris on Thursday as planned. After putting the finishing touches on my post “Kayaking While Channeling Nicole” I was both physically and emotionally exhausted, so I took a little break from posting (I say posting and not writing because I am always writing something most of which I do not post) to explore Paris.
Yesterday I was out and about early determined to beat the lines at the Eiffel Tower (you will read more about that later). I spent the rest of the day sightseeing and walking the street of Paris. At the end of the day I was tired, but I was determined to post. That was the plan until….
The Internet Went Out!
The lights and electricity did too, but they came back…the internet did not.
I needed the Internet not only to post my blog, but also to access my notes stored in the cloud. Well if I couldn’t post I could fact and spell check, I thought. As I read over my draft I realized I needed to check if I spelled the name of a street correctly, so I opened up Safari. Drats! No internet.
I called the night receptionist to find out if he had any idea when service would resume. He only repeated what I already knew.
“The internet is not working Madame,” he said. “I do not know when it will be fixed.” That did not sound very reassuring. It was getting late so I put the revision and my internet issues to bed while getting some rest myself.
The next morning I called Tambi the day receptionist and asked him the same question.
“Yes, the internet has not worked since yesterday evening,” he said. I sort of knew that (it was the reason I was calling after all). I said nothing and let him continue. “I have called to get it fixed, but it is Sunday. I will call you when it is working again.” I thanked him and hung up the phone.
I had just started a draft for a new post when a funny Facebook Messenger SMS from my cousin Larry appeared on the screen of my iPhone 6. It wasn’t until I clicked on it and read it that it hit me.
The Internet Was Back!
I figured that if I started editing my post now, I could actually still make my self-imposed deadline if I took advantage of the time difference. When I took another look at my iPhone the battery icon was red–low battery. No problem, I plugged the phone in and pulled my fully charged iPad mini from my knapsack (always good to have a backup plan).
The problem was…for some reason I do not fully understand my iPhone can pick up the wifi signal any place in my tiny room (even though the signal is weak the further I am away from the door) my iPad can’t.
I am guessing that the access point is in the hallway and the majority of my room is not in line of sight of it, the bathroom is. Yes, when I enter my room the first thing I see is the toilet. I say that word “toilet” with a New York accent, but it sounds so much more refine when spoken with a French accent.
So in an effort to follow through with my commitment to the readers of this blog..I want all of you to know that I am now writing from the seat of the toilet. I will remain here until my iPhone is charged or until the maid kicks me out to clean the room and I have to relocated to the salon.
Truly a committed writer,
Blaine
